The Tico Panama Adventure & Nature itinerary is a multi-country adventure that explores some of the most unique destinations along Central America’s Caribbean Coast. Adventure & nature seekers will have the chance to raft through the mountainous jungle on a high-octane, white-water adventure en route to the gorgeous and easygoing beaches of the Caribbean Coast of Southern Costa Rica & Northern Panama.
Your Costa Rica nature adventure begins in the Talamanca Mountains in the shadow of the most active volcano in Costa Rica. En route from SJO, you’ll pass the nation’s gigantic sugarcane plantations, artisanally cultivated coffee fields, and the world-class, white-water rapids. After spending a few days in this area, known for its rich Tico culture, you will venture to the Caribbean Coast and the quiet town of Cahuita. This area of the country has a beautiful National Park and offers secluded, white & black sand beaches with electric-blue water and a laid-back vibe.
Your adventure continues as you explore a nearby national park rich with wildlife. As night falls, the sounds of calypso and reggae will fill the air, setting the perfect backdrop for your Caribbean experience. From there, your journey takes you further south. You’ll cross the Panama border with your local Costa Rican guide and board a boat bound for the Bocas del Toro Archipelago. Spend your final days on Isla Bastimentos, enjoying jungle hikes, snorkeling, and scuba diving. As your Caribbean adventure winds down, a 45-minute flight from Bocas del Toro will take you back to San José just in time for your flight home.

Typical 9-day Tico Panama Adventure Itinerary
Day #1: Arrival & transfer to the mountain town of Turrialba
When you arrive at Costa Rica’s San José Airport (SJO), a modern, air-conditioned vehicle will be waiting for you, with your private driver holding a sign with your name on it. A scenic two-hour drive east will take you to your hotel in Turrialba. Along the way, you can stop for lunch and admire the diverse landscape of the Talamanca Mountains. That evening, settle into your boutique hotel to rest and recharge for the week of adventures ahead.

Begin each morning with a delicious breakfast at your hotel, featuring the classic Costa Rican dish, gallo pinto, and fresh tropical fruit. You’ll kick off your adventures with an exhilarating canyoning experience, where you’ll rappel down a series of waterfalls nestled in a canyon within the mountains. This morning, you’ll also zip-line through the treetops on an exciting jungle canopy tour. The adventure wraps up with a traditional lunch in the heart of the rainforest. The afternoon is yours to explore Turrialba or return to your hotel to relax and recharge.
Day #3: Pacuare River Rafting & Transfer to Cahuita
Explore deep into the rainforest to experience the pristine beauty of the Pacuare River. Led by experienced river guides, you’ll navigate one of the world’s most scenic rivers, with breathtaking views within the Indigenous Biological Reserve. The day includes a riverside picnic and thrilling class III & IV rapids in the lower section of the river. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls and float through the enchanting “Dos Montañas” canyon. The rafting excursion lasts about five hours, with opportunities for side hikes and additional exploration. After the trip, your vehicle and luggage will be waiting, complete with changing rooms and a rinse-off area, before you head to the southern Caribbean coast.
Day #4: Day at Leisure or Guided Hike in Cahuita National Park
After your thrilling day of white water rafting, unwind with the Caribbean’s relaxed vibe, international cuisine, and reggae music. Today is free for you to explore as you like. Consider learning to surf on the local beaches or visit Cahuita National Park to spot sloths, monkeys, and toucans. We can arrange a tour, or you can explore on your own. The park’s flat trails make for an easy and enjoyable hike. In the evening, discover the town of Cahuita and its variety of Caribbean-themed restaurants.

Enjoy the day and relax, or choose from Costa Rica Escapes’ optional activities. Whether you want to hike, lounge by the pool, take surf lessons, or explore remote beaches by bike, we have recommendations. In the evening, savor a delicious meal at one of the local restaurants.
Day #6: Transfer to Bocas del Toro, Panama
After an early breakfast, your host will pick you up in Cahuita and drive you to the border town of Sixaola. From there, you’ll cross into Panama and continue by private vehicle to a dock to begin the adventure to Panama. From there, you’ll catch a boat to Bocas del Toro, then transfer to another boat for a 20-minute ride to Isla Bastimentos. Finally, check into your bungalow or villa and spend the afternoon exploring the island’s secluded beaches and jungle trails. Your boutique resort offers two restaurants, an adventure center, and nearby beaches to explore. Grocery service is available by pre-order, as there are no stores on the island.
Day #7: Snorkel on the reef and explore the islands on a Catamaran Sailing Tour
Spend the day discovering the underwater wonders of the Bocas del Toro archipelago. After breakfast, board a catamaran for a sailing and snorkeling adventure. Glide through the Caribbean’s crystal-clear waters and spot dolphins as you sail. Jump in the water and explore vibrant coral reefs before a leisurely lunch on board. Return to your hotel in the afternoon to relax and watch the sunset.

Spend your final full day savoring the beauty of Isla Bastimentos. Spend the day relaxing on the beach or exploring the island’s extensive jungle trails, leading to pristine beaches and coves. The offshore snorkeling is world-class and easily accessible. For a more profound experience, consider hiring a naturalist guide to help you spot wildlife you might otherwise miss. Pack a backpack and make the most of this last day in paradise.
Day #9: Flight from Bocas del Toro to SJO and back home
Take a boat and van to the Bocas airport for your morning flight back to SJO, ensuring ample time for your connecting flight home. Costa Rica Escapes will coordinate all the details to get you there smoothly.
